Hot days make even the most disciplined among us think about indulging in a sweet and chilly
Often the ‘healthy’ alternative to ice cream or milkshakes is a smoothie or smoothie bowl…but just as I shared on social media yesterday, most of the smoothie bowls on the menu at the local juice shop are LOADED with sugar.
You may as well be eating a bowl of ice cream. No seriously…why not do that instead…??
But, before you completely give up on smoothie bowls, or turn to a creamy milkshake, I have a solution that’s just as refreshing without the harmful and unwanted refined sugar. You see, in order to make smoothies and smoothie bowls taste good enough for a second try, the juice bar uses sweetened yogurt, agave nectar, honey, dates and bananas to really amp up the sweet factor. Heck there is even one local shop that uses various Jello Packs to add their flavor.
The problem is that while most of these are ‘healthy’ forms of sugar (not the Jello), it’s still sugar that impacts your blood sugar and makes your body prone to store fat. Not exactly what you were hoping for when getting a ‘healthy’ treat, right?!
Luckily, I have the perfect solution…make your own smoothie bowls at home!
By controlling the ingredients that go into your smoothie bowl, you’re able to create a sweet, chilly treat that has all the flavor and refreshment that you want without relying on added sugar to achieve great flavor.
Here’s how to do it:
- Use unsweetened Greek yogurt
- Use high-quality, stevia-sweetened protein powder
- Use unsweetened almond milk
- Avoid agave nectar, honey, dried fruit and bananas
- Add a boost of energy with a scoop of EVERYDAY ENERGY
- 1 cup frozen strawberries
- 1/2 cup Greek Yogurt
- 1/4 cup almond milk
- 1-2 scoops EVERYDAY ENERGY
- 1-2 scoops Stawberries and Cream Premium Whey Protein
- 1/2 vanilla bean, scraped
- Combine all of the ingredients in a high-speed blender and blend until smooth.
- Serve immediately, garnished with fruit of your choice!

Next time I’m going to try a Peanut Butter & Jelly flavored bowl by using Strawberries and Cream Protein powder, unsweetened yogurt, frozen strawberries, almond milk and a spoonful of peanut butter.
